Operations Manager

Configuration Manager

Existing approaches to configuration and change control management range from highly expensive and purely reactive efforts when problems arise, to manual process-intensive configuration and change control procedures. Typically, when administrators must implement change, they run custom scripts or modify one server at a time using point tools like Windows Terminal Services, telnet, or SSH. This process is time-consuming and limits responsiveness at most data centers. In addition, the manual nature of these changes inevitably leads to errors causing drift in server configurations.

BladeLogic Configuration Manager, a component of the BladeLogic Operations Manager suite of data center automation products, allows IT organizations to provision, patch, configure, and update servers across platforms and data centers. It enables consistency in change and configuration management without error-prone scripting and manual intervention.

BladeLogic Configuration Manager supports a policy-based approach whereby changes are applied to a policy, and then synchronized with the target servers. This bi-directional approach significantly lowers the cost and errors associated with managing server infrastructure by ensuring that changes are target-specific and that users have visibility into all prior changes before new ones are made. BladeLogic Configuration Manager also features a cross-platform, command line interface (Network Shell™) that supports single-sign on using a range of authentication protocols. All user communication is encrypted, and all user actions are logged and can be authorized based on a user's role.

BladeLogic customers have lowered their operating costs by using Configuration Manager to automate:

  • Provisioning of base OS, server stack components (middleware, utilities, system software), or multi-tier applications and manage deployments
  • Deployment of patches, packages, and granular configuration updates
  • Automation of runbooks for operations tasks such as reboots, log file rotations, root cause analysis, DNS management, etc.
  • Backup and recovery of servers and their associated configurations to meet business continuity objectives
